Tina Brown’s first issue of Newsweek features Hillary Clinton on its cover. Of the six stories highlighted there, three are about women:

On “This Week with Christianne Amanpour,” Brown said:

“I think what’s interesting right now is that Hillary Clinton, in fact, has actually at last met her moment, in a sense. Because her long-held conviction has always been that women are the leading indicator. That if you empower women, you’re gonna make huge changes in the democracy movement and, of course, in the GDP of the countries concerned. And she’s been pounding that drum for a long time. So this issue of Newsweek, you see her really in action, what she is doing. We followed her, for instance, on a trip to Yemen just a few weeks before the Arab revolution and saw her conducting a really robust town hall, where people were being encouraged to talk, were being encouraged to ask about women’s rights. And after that meeting, she met with a few of the women who clustered around her and asked her and said, ‘Can you help us educate women here, about the country here?’ “

R.I.P., Norman “General Johnson.” “Give Me Just A Little More Time” was one of the four songs Ui covered. We combined it with “Thief of Fire” by The Pop Group. There is a reason it never left the practice space.

Johnson was a crucial style counselor for Weller and the Northern Soul contingent. Really, really love his singing and still find it deeply idiosyncratic.

What a loss. This is such a classic song from such a great soul singer.

In light of some of today’s depressing news, I watched Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” campaign and it resonated with me. I used to fantasize about starting a program that would send inspiring spokespersons from school to school with only the message, “Once secondary education is over, your life actually begins—I’m serious.” But that’s probably not what you want to hear when you have to suffer in school for another five years, or semester, or week, or whatever. In the interest of doing something that might have more of an immediate effect I found a couple organizations that cater specifically to helping gay youth: The Trevor Project, The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, and then The Ali Forney Center here in New York, all of which have volunteer opportunities and take donations. While I’ve never been one who related very well with The Youth, whatever their romantic inclinations, this bullying, these suicides… enough. I don’t want to resort to this quite yet, so I’m reaching out to our phenomenal TumblrGay (& friends) crew in case you have other ideas or know of upcoming opportunities to get involved.

Please take a moment this weekend to remember that five years ago, New Orleans was left behind during the levee breaks that followed Hurricane Katrina. This was not a natural disaster. I am proud to be a native New Orleanian and will never forget what happened to my beautiful hometown in the weeks that followed August 29, 2005. We need to fight for infrastructure in our country.

For two weeks now, I’ve been swimming 1000 m twice a week. Today I added some running into the mix, running to Riverbank State Park where I ran five times around the track and walked one last time around before walking home. I’m hoping I can build up to running twice a week, adding distance as the weeks progress. As for swimming, my hope is to eventually swim 1600 m twice a week before work. A yoga class once a week at lunchtime would be an excellent counterbalance. When nothing else is sure, it’s nice to have something you can depend on.
